Olancho Aid
About Us
Since the inception of our first school in 1996, the Olancho Aid Foundation's mission has remained the same: to provide youth an education that will empower them to transform their communities and country.
Economic poverty in Honduras forces the majority of children work to support their family, rather than attend school. Many children do not have one or both parents in their home, as many leave to seek employment in other countries like the United States. Olancho Aid responds to these children's needs by giving them options and creating opportunities for societal change through learning.
The key to our programs is not to give simple replies to poverty, but rather lasting solutions. Each school day we make an investment in our students, who have the individual and collective power to be leaders, decision makers, activists, entrepreneurs and conscious world citizens. Our organization seeks to turn those living marginally into active participants within their communities.
Learning is an effective means to realize these goals and our strategies include: (1) offering the only special education program in Olancho; (2) developing a well-rounded curriculum to educate students intellectually, spiritually and emotionally; (3) challenging students to engage the world through English language skills and interaction with foreign volunteers; (4) fundraising to provide scholarships and financial aid to students from economically poor backgrounds (90% of our students at Escuelita Nazareth come from families living at or below the poverty line); and (5) hosting mission trips we call Solidarity Projects for foreign groups who can offer talents and resources to those with the most needs in Olancho.
