Our Projects
Solidarity Projects
The Roman Catholic Church is rich in teachings about social justice and activism on behalf of the poor. Solidarity is a call for unity between peoples to eliminate divisions in the world and care for the most vulnerable of society. Pope John Paul II wrote about Solidarity saying, "Sacred Scripture continually speaks to us of an active commitment to our neighbor . . . This duty is not limited to one's own family, nation or state, but extends progressively to all . . . so no one can consider himself extraneous or indifferent to the lot of another member of the human family" (Centesimus Annus [CA], no. 51).
In this tradition Olancho Aid sponsors Solidarity Projects aimed at joining communities in Honduras with the larger human family. Where there exists suffering and oppression, Olancho Aid invites student, professional and church groups to visit Honduras and work with local communities to restore justice.
Deeply embedded in this program is the idea that we are all helpers: every person is lifted to a higher place when acting in communion with their brothers and sisters, regardless of nationality, economic status, education level or personal resources.
Past Successes
Olancho Aid has had the blessing to host several groups from the United States, including: (1) faculty members and students from Rivier College, Nashua, New Hampshire; (2) a student youth group from St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Acton, Massachusetts; and (3) parish members from St. Luke's Parish, Temple, Texas; and (4) a youth group from Our Lady Mary Queen of Peace in New Hampshire.
Recent Solidarity Projects have included: (1) construction on a school in a rural farming community; (2) medical brigades to isolated mountain villages; (3) environmental cleanup projects with public schools in Juticalpa; (4) program assistance to Escuelita Nazareth; (5) donating school materials to a poorly funded kindergarten; (6) donating clothes to street workers and their families; and (7) donating school supplies and food to children in Laguna Seca.
If your group is interested in our Solidarity Projects, please contact us today so we can begin the discussion!
